BIO-PROM stands for the project “Promoting sustainable production and use of bioenergy in the Russian Federation and Ukraine”. It is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in the framework of the International Climate Initiative (ICI). The project had a duration from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2017.
The Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) coordinated BIO-PROM aiming to promote sustainable production and use of bioenergy in the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Together with the GFA Consulting Group and local partners, the following main activities were performed:
- Preparation of promising bioenergy projects through framework analysis and consultation of possible partners in the Russian Federation and Ukraine
- Support of technology transfer and facilitation of investments within selected pilot projects
- Promotion of sustainable production and use of bioenergy within a comprehensive capacity-building programme
The project supported the identification of bioenergy potential as a decentralised energy source in Russia and the Ukraine. In this process, the sustainability of the bioenergy supply was of particular importance since the use of agricultural waste materials in a controlled manner produces bioenergy as well as reduces emissions into the air, ground and water. In both countries, the aim of the project was to enable project partners to independently recognise, develop and take advantage of opportunities for using renewable resources as an energy source. In the context of planning and implementing pilot projects, the partners received advice and training that strengthen their project development capacity for initiating and encouraging future bioenergy projects. Sustainable financing models help to shape the policy framework and to further develop concepts on bioenergy usage.
