Triggering Sustainable Biogas Energy Communities through Social Innovation

The project Triggering Sustainable Biogas Energy Communities through Social Innovation, with the abbreviation ISABEL, was funded under the Horizon 2020 Framework Program of the European Union for Research and Innovation.

ISABEL was successfully finalised by FNR after three years of duration (1st January 2016 – 31st December 2018). The project undertaken the preparation and implementation of local and regional concepts for the production of renewable energies. ISABEL thus made an important contribution to the overarching strategic goal of a low-carbon economy in the EU.

Sustainable biogas technologies were in deep analysed, as part of energy community concepts, because outside of Germany this concepts is unknown. ISABEL had work on this unexploited potential to overcome barriers and to promote community biogas in the EU.

In order to achieve the integration of biogas as social relevant in the communities, social innovation was pursued. Using modern marketing research techniques to identify the needs and diversity of every single community in the three ISABEL regions. As result, biogas was positioned as an economical bioenergy source and a common community good. Additionally, new concepts for the formation of communal local energy systems with public participation were developed.

The FNR led the analysis of political framework in the European Union as well as the identification of communities in Germany, UK and Greece. The FNR gained new approaches for further development of Bioenergy Communities (Bioenergiedörfer). Additionally, the FNR helped other European regions in their development.

Project partners: Q-PLAN (Greece), EBW (Greece), FNR (Germany), GBTF (UK), INSEAD (France), LCF (Germany), SURREY (UK), WR (Belgium)
