BESTF3 (Bioenergy Sustaining the Future) is an initiative funded by Horizon 2020 running under the umbrella of the European Strategic Technology Plan (SET-Plan) and based on the implementation plan of the European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EIBI). The BESTF network of national/regional ministries and funding agencies (from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Spain, Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom) exists since 2012 and provides funding to collaborative bioenergy projects that demonstrate at least one innovative step and will result in demonstration at a pre-commercial stage, thus boosting the contribution of bioenergy to the EU climate and energy ambitions.
The BESTF3 joint call (2015) was launched on 01. December 2015 and after a competitive 2-stage process 4 recommended projects started working in 2017. Germany has not participated in this joint call. BESTF3 is cooperating with ERA-NET Bioenergy. Three additional joint calls for R&D proposals were completed.
Under BESTF3 FNR is mainly responsible for implementation of additional activities (WP6 und WP7) and is also preparing annual newsletters and organised the final conference – BESTF3 FINAL FORUM.
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) participates in this network via FNRs funding programme “Renewable Resources”.
Under BESTF1 (2012 - 2017) & BESTF2 (2013 - 2018) a total of 5 projects (2 incl. FNR funding: BioProGress & BioSNG) were funded.
BESTF3 FINAL FORUM
FNR organised the final conference of BESTF3, which was held on 21. November 2019 in Brussels during the 9th Stakeholder Plenary Meeting of the European Technology and Innovation Platform Bioenergy (ETIP Bioenergy-SABS). The outcomes of five projects funded under BESTF2 and BESTF3 were presented and in a panel discussion between representatives of the EC, BESTF funders, BESTF evaluators and the funded projects lessons learned from BESTF programme were discussed.
