BIOEASTsUP

Advancing Sustainable Circular Bioeconomy in Central and Eastern European Countries

BIOEASTsUP is a project funded through the European Research and Innovation programme, Horizon 2020, and will last for the duration of three years (October 2019 to September 2022). It is a coordination and support action in response to the Call RUR-18-2019, “Support to the BIOEAST initiative: boosting knowledge and innovation-based bioeconomies”. The Central-Eastern European Initiative for Knowledge-based Agriculture, Aquaculture and Forestry in the Bioeconomy – BIOEAST – offers a shared strategic research and innovation framework, which aims at working towards sustainable bioeconomies in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries.

The project consortium consists of 21 partners from 14 countries and aims to support the BIOEAST initiative and Action Plan for the transition of 11 Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries to the bioeconomy. The overall project objectives are:

  • To trigger strategic thinking at governmental level and transnational peer-to-peer development of national circular bioeconomy strategies in BIOEAST countries
  • To emphasise the role of a multi-actor approach in developing new value chains to advance multiple bioeconomies
  • To develop, in a multi-stakeholder driven approach, a consolidated BIOEAST Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
  • To set-up and maintain a macro-regional framework in support of the BIOEAST initiative, and the SRIA development and sustainability
  • To facilitate evidence-based policy making
  • To increase the visibility of the bioeconomy within the quintuple helix in the BIOEAST region

The Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) is supporting the preparation of national platforms for the bioeconomy strategy development, including two types of working groups. This means the establishment of BIOEAST Ad-Hoc Inter-Ministerial Groups and BIOEAST National Thematic Working Groups in each partner country. They will facilitate the consultations between the public institutions involved, and create dialogue with various stakeholders. Moreover, FNR will coordinate the preparation of a joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for BIOEAST, while also developing an exploitation strategy for the project results.
