ForestValue & ForestValue2
Innovating forest-based bioeconomy
The ERA-NET Co-fund on innovative forest-based bioeconomy - ForestValue started on 01.10.2017 and will run for 5,5 years until 31.03.2023. The funding initiative is comprised of 29 funding organisations from 19 countries and received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
ForestValue is a collaboration of the three forest-based ERA-NETs WoodWisdom-Net Research Programme, SUMFOREST and FORESTERRA.
The WoodWisdom ERA-NET had already implemented 4 joint transnational calls with a total of 62 funded projects, FNR successfully participated in the last 3 calls with a total funding of 24 projects. WoodWisdomNet+ is ending in November 2017.
FNR is a very active partner in ForestValue, being responsible for planning of both joint calls, active in the call office, responsible for preparation of a workshop in cooperation with Argentina, preparing 2 newsletters per year, doing 2 statistical analyses etc.. FNR participated in both joint calls of ForestValue and is currently funding the German partners in 12 of the 17 projects of the cofunded call 2017 and 4 of the 8 supported projects of the Joint Call 2021.The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) participates in ForestValue via funding programme “Renewable Resources” managed by FNR.
ForestValue Joint Call 2017: In October 2017 the ForestValue Research Programme launched a transnational call for proposals for research, development and innovation in the forest-based sector, cofunded by the European Union. The topics of the ForestValue joint call contributed to transforming the global economy from a dependence on fossil and non-renewable raw materials to a sustainable “bio-based economy”. A competitive two-stage submission process was used in this call. The 17 recommended projects (12 with FNR funding) ran from early 2018 until 2022.
ForestValue Joint Call 2021: The second call for joint European research projects under the ForestValue Research Programme opened in January 2021 and was closed in April 2021. 15 funders from 10 countries participated in this joint transnational call with EU co-funding. The overarching aim was to support projects that produce knowledge to promote the best possible use of forests and forest resources for the benefit of society on its way to a climate-neutral circular economy and sustainable society. Based on the scientific evaluation by the International Expert Panel and available national funding, the Call Steering Committee of ForestValue Joint Call 2021 decided to select eight (8) projects to be recommended for funding. Projects started late 2021/early 2022.

The HORIZON Coordination and Support Action ForestValue2 started on 01.01.2023 and will run for 5 years until 31.12.2027. ForestValue2 brings together 14 owners and managers of national and regional RDI programmes in 11 Member States of the European Union - FI, IE, DE, ES, SI, LV, PL, SK, IT, EE, RO - and in one Associated Country (NO) with an aim to coordinate national and regional R&I programmes by pooling national resources and contributing to the alignment of national research and innovation policies.
The project has four main objectives:
- Identification of common research and innovation priorities agreed among the participating national and regional R&I programmes in the area of forest-based bioeconomy, taking into account international developments where relevant;
- Implementation of a joint call(s), resulting in the funding of transnational collaborative R&I projects;
- Implementation of other joint activities supporting the market, regulatory or societal uptake based on forest science results;
- A multi-actor approach in addressing Global Challenges, including relevant contribution to the SDGs.
Like in the predecessor ForestValue, FNR is majorly involved in the preparation and implementation of the joint call(s). The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) participates in ForestValue via the funding programme “Renewable Resources” managed by FNR.
ForestValue2 will be a great continuation of the cooperation, extending the network to Eastern Europe as well.
